THE CHASE Shot in the Summer of 2005 in the Bovingdon Airfield , this was one of the most exciting projects we did so far! We wanted to create an action sequence where a Land Rover would miraculously escape from continuous air bombings... Obviously this would require a lot of planning and preparation work (cleaning the field and creating the holes for the petrol charges) . The first step was to define a exact route for the Jeep so that we could place the petrol charges sideways along that path. We mainly used petrol lifter charges, some of them to lift just some dust, other fireballs. To cover the explosions we had 3 cameras in different positions – one camera up in a cliff covering all the action , other in a second car parallel to the jeep and another inside the Land Rover. The main difficulty of this exercise was to synchronise all the action with the trigger of the charges along the precisely established track. In order to achieve this we used Motorola’s radios to coordinate the camera car operator and driver with the driver of the white Land Rover and the person operating the firing box. After some rehearsals and 2 false starts we managed to successfully shoot the sequence. A nice red van blows up in the middle of the field with fire and smoke darkens the clear blue sky. To achieve the van explosion it was required a lot of preparation work done by us and supervised by Graham Brown. The van itself needed stripping down (removing the gasoline tank and other combustible parts that could be projected over the surrounding area) as well as a meticulous rigging of the explosives inside the van to the firing box (by checking the correct test signal given for each wire). We mainly use flash powder charges (petrol lifter), around 200g each, some of them to detach roof parts during the explosion and others to lift the fireballs into the air.
